THIRTY

Pete Martinez came back from L.A. on Wednesday and brought a McDonald’s sack into my conference room. He dumped a half-dozen Egg McMuffins on the coffee table. “I drove straight from the airport. I haven’t had breakfast.”

“If you came straight here, where did you buy the Egg McMuffins?”

“Okay, smart ass, I came almost straight from the airport. I stopped at a McDonald’s drive-thru. You hungry?”

“I’m always hungry.” I pulled two Egg McMuffins toward me.

“I know it’s eleven a.m. for you, but it’s eight a.m. in L.A., and I caught the red-eye from LAX. I avoid airline food. Consider this my late breakfast and your early lunch. I got four hours sleep, but I flew business class. It wasn’t so bad.”

“You avoid airline food, but you bought breakfast at McDonald’s.”

“Don’t be such a snob; it’s actually quite healthful.”

“Hey, I love McDonald’s too, but I also eat airline food. I never met a meal I didn’t like.”

The receptionist walked in with two coffees.

“Thanks, Betty.”

She closed the door behind her.

I unwrapped my first Egg McMuffin. “What did you learn in L.A.?”

Pete washed down a bite of sandwich before he replied. “It’s not Carmelo Sarducci nor Georgy Pops that killed the girl. I have a friend who has a friend in the FBI. He introduced me to this guy in the Los Angeles field office. They have surveilled Carmelo and Georgy Pops for the last six weeks. Wiretaps, surveillance, a regular full court press. Sarducci and Pops did shady stuff, but none of it had to do with a hit in Port City or Nashville, not even in Chicago.”

That’s all I needed—another dead end with the first Orlando concert in two days.
